Holiday Letter 2010
Sheryl- It’s been a year of reflection and gratitude. I’ve been happier this year than I can remember in a very long time. I’ve made some life style changes that have improved my attitude and quality of life. I attended the World Magic Seminar in March. This is my favorite magic convention. I was able to sit in the front row and take photos with the permission of some board members this year. How much fun was that? 4000 photos. (Siegfried &)Roy continues to amaze me on his rehabilitations. We had a “Ladies only” afternoon at the invitation of Lynette and Siegfried, in the private gated area of the “Secret Garden” at the Mirage Hotel. The ladies only outings are a highlight of every WMS for me. My father is at home a lot now, and traveling has slowed down for him. The first thing we talk about is magic on my visits. We still get out and visit the Seal Beach, Ring 96, on occasion and try to visit the Magic Castle whenever we can. I’m always looking for someone to join me at the castle...so if you’re visiting from out of state let me know and we can plan a night. We had a pleasant visit with Jeff McB. last month at my dad’s house. We gave him a tour of Marvin’s magic room and house. I have to say that I don’t visit facebook often, but it provides a wonderful way to keep informed on Magicians from around the world.
I’ve been very busy this past year with Ryan’s Marching Band and Indoor Drumline. We do lots of fundraising, sponsoring & attending events. We all carpool to watch Ayala competitions. Ryan and his band of #200 took first place in all local & regional band competitions in 2010. Congratulations son!
I’m also finding time to do Jason’s school yearbook. I love doing desktop graphics the school PFA keeps me busy with all the events they offer to their students at Country Springs Elementary. . Jason is in 6th grade and is trying to find his place in life. He plays trumpet and has just learned to play Tennis for the last 2 months. Tennis may be Jason’s sport. He was able to rescue a lost animal and give it a home. Jason calls him snowball, as he is small, fluffy, smart and rambunctious. I never saw myself as a dog person although this one has won me over. We think he is a cross between Maltese-poodle. The vet thinks he’s about 1 year old.
Travel
Blue Whales off the coast of CA in Redondo Beach. This was incredible!!! We saw Blue whales (the largest mammal on the earth) the entire 2 hours we were out at sea.
Trip to Indianapolis-Bands of America competition, Indy 500 speedway. I roomed with two fantastic Booster moms. Ryan Marching band took Semi-finals, and his Percussion ensemble took first place.
I took several mini-trips to Manhattan Beach (my home town) with my dear friend Mercer. She would rent a motel room and we would travel back in time. We have been friends since 3rd grade.
The boys and I took 10 days this summer and traveled to Palm Springs. We are partners in a condo-timeshare and we had little time or money and this was 1.5 hours from home. My sister Diana & Bob joined us for a weekend.

Early this morning as I was walking through the bedroom I noticed a picture on the bookshelf of grandpa Marvin my son Ryan and Sheryl it was taken when Ryan was 2 years old at the beach and I couldn’t believe it was 12 years ago time goes by so fast. Fast forward Ryan is now a freshman in high school and is doing very well, he is keeping his grades up and is in the school band they just performed there winter concert this week and it was the best performance of the year all those kids just amaze me they are all so talented. I am one of the Ayala boosters and I help out whenever I can. I have fun meeting new people and watching the kids perform the school band including the girls from color guard total 200 members it is one of the largest school bands around.
Our other son Jason is now in the sixth grade now and just came back from 1000 pines out door science school he was there for a week and had a great time he passes his time playing video games and playing with friends.
I am still with the Union Pacific Railroad and finishing up my 17th year. Things are extremely bad down there. They have laid off over 200 people in my dept. As the recession took hold of the country, we were the first to feel it with all of the imports down and less trains to run as they were forced to start laying off people. How I wish I could retire but I can’t just yet. As we get older it sure seems that time goes by faster. I used to work a lot but now I tend notice a lot of things I normally wouldn’t have noticed. In closing I just want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Ryan
Hello Everyone!
Hi! For people I have not met yet, my name is Ryan Aguilar! This portion of the letter was not intended to be an autobiography so I will start explaining my last year’s events.
From January- April I was basically doing one major task. Drumline. I was very committed and it kept me at practice a lot (which drove me mom crazy). I was pit captain and got an award :D. Then in May, I went to audition for the Ayala Band and Colorguard. I made it in and was very ecstatic. During the summer were a lot of rehearsals for marching band. Most of them were from 12-9. Fun... And during November we went to Grand Nationals in Indianapolis to go and compete. Our band got like 17th place or something…….But my Drumline (which I am taking part in) scored the highest possible score over there even though we did not make finals. Our score was a 99 in prelims and 98 in semifinals. Best score for percussion! Right now I am taking part in my second semester Drumline. I will have camp on the 28th-30th from 9-9. It will make us amazingly good! We are a world champion Drumline. If we ever compete and you maybe want to see me perform, just ask my Madre and she will tell you one of the best days for you to come and see our WORLD CHAMPION DRUMLINE. Well I need to go and focus on arranging my music. Have a Wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Love, Ryan Aguilar
On a sadder note I lost my younger brother this year. We lost him way too soon. I know that this former wife, Gina, I and many others did try for many years to help him. It was not his destiny. The sendoff at the beach for him was touching and just what he would of liked. There were stories of his endless escapades and everyone remembered the “Ricky” we grew up with. I feel his spirit is with my mother, her parents and all those that came before him. RIP Rick.
